Graduate Student Association for Atmospheric Sciences at Howard University

Welcome! This is just  a temporary site to allow you access to the minutes, and other documents you might want/need until we can get things up and running on the Howard University Systems. So please forgive the pop-ups etc. It may not be pretty, but it gives us a home!

What GSAAS Stands for

The Graduate Student Association for Atmospheric Sciences has been formed as a student organization with three main goals in mind:

  1. To foster growth of Atmospheric Sciences both at/in the name of Howard University and in general.
  2. To provide a student-faculty/staff interface which will allow for better communication of concerns and opinions of both parties, pertaining to the Howard University Atmospheric Sciences (HUPAS) program.
  3. To facilitate interrelationships among the many departments and disciplines in the HUPAS program.

GSAAS plans to forward these goals through series of professional, social, and educational events, as well as panels and discussions among HUPAS members. There will be general meetings of GSAAS members, at least once each month, where events and issues will be discussed. In addition, there will be several committees formed by GSAAS members for the planning of discussions and events.

Our First AMS Event as a Student Chapter

We are officially an AMS Chapter!

Our first event as an AMS Chapter was a joint meeting with the DC Chapter of AMS, UMD and UMBC. It was held on Wednesday, February 17 on Howard Campus. There was pizza and time to get to meet some of our colleagues as well as to see old friends. Thanks to everyone who came!

The evening opened with remarks from Jonathan Smith, the current president of  GSAAS/HU-AMS, followed by remarks and announcements  by Andrea Bleistein, the current president of DC-AMS. Cassie Stearns then set the stage for student presentations with an overview of the Howard Atmospheric Sciences program (HUPAS)

The night featured four student research presentations:

Micheal Hicks (Howard U): "Analysis of PBL Turbulent and Non-Turbulent fluxes."

Jonathan W. Smith (Howard U): "Modeling Elevated Upper Tropospheric Ozone due to Deep Convection during the 2006 AEROSE II Cruise"

Steven Greybush (UMD): "Creating a Martian Weather and Climate Reanalysis: Perspectives from Spacecraft and Models"

Chris Wilson (UMBC): "Atmospheric Remote Sensing at UMBC: A PBL Study"

Finally, there was a presentation on some of the research at UMBC.

It was a great Event and we we hope this is only the first of many such events. To be added to the mailing list for future events, please email us at: GSAAS.HU at gmail.com.
